OUR HISTORY

How it all began

In 2016 Jean-Charles Samuelian and Charles Gorintin set out to revolutionise the healthcare industry. They identified a huge problem to solve: Healthcare is expensive, unadapted to individual needs, reactive rather than predictive or preventive, complex and hard to navigate, while burning-out doctors. So, they created Alan, which started out as the first fully digital health insurance and has now evolved into so much more!

As of today, Alan operates in 3 countries (🇫🇷, 🇧🇪, 🇪🇸) and covers more than 400,000 members, representing over €250m+ of annualized revenue. In 2022 we raised a further €183m in a series E funding round bringing the company’s total valuation to €2.7bn. The team is 500+ people and growing. 

We have been recognised as LinkedIn’s Top Start up in France 2021 and is recurrently named as  one of La French Tech’s Next40 startups.

We do not seek consensus and challenge expertise with first principles. We look for new ideas starting with heart, intuition, guts and taste. We learn from failures and successes.

9) Disciplined in execution

We clarify ownership, focus on A+ problems, are biased to actions, challenge only if worth it, display self-organization, respect ETA or over-communicate if late, keeping each other accountable.

10) Fight for simplicity

We fight the small easy decision, kill bureaucracy, show concision in writing and speech, adopt a smartly frugal approach, and use our common sense to think global

We don’t pretend to suit everyone and as radical transparency is one of our core values, we want to be open about what we are not, to help you decide if Alan is a place for you. 

Alan is not always a comfortable place, high performing culture can be demanding as we expect people to push for excellence. 

Alan is not a place where you will get it right every time, Alaners are comfortable with sometimes failing and learning from the experience. 

Alan is not somewhere you can rinse and repeat: Rather than rely on prior knowledge, we prefer Alaners to try to break problems down to first principles and try an even more innovative approach. 

Alan is not always an easy ride: Transparency can take you out of your comfort zone and receiving feedback can sometimes feel uneasy.
